There is no denying that rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly is alive in the Canadian Prairies! The irresistible beat of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis and Jerry Lee’s music has been rooted deep in our hearts, our feet and our collective musical consciousness. This is why The Dice Cubes seem both familiar and shockingly new. Gleaning what they can from the giants, and drawing inspiration from the likes of contemporary artists like JD McPherson, Chris Isaak and Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, The Dice Cubes are tapping into this enduring vibration while trying to shape their own distinct beat.
While this Edmonton-based four-piece has other styles of music at their fingertips, be it rockabilly, jazz, New Orleans rhythm and blues, or punk, it is that bedrock pulse laid down by pioneers like D.J. Fontana back in ’57, that resonates throughout the music of The Dice Cubes. Igniting the dance floor with a snap of the snare; enough to cause teenagers to jerk in paroxysms of joy, and every adult to tremble in anticipation of a coming cultural shift. The beat has been twisted into our collective DNA; it is an eternal rhythm.
The band’s exploration of their influences rolls out fast and infectiously; all available on their second effort, Got Lucky. Moving from rollicking rockabilly (Rumble Strip; Long and Lanky) to jungle beats (The Apeman) to bouncy Hawaiian grooves (Hula Girl), they all become more evident on second or third listens: a touch of country, a hint of NOLA, an overly caffeinated hot-rod Cliff Gallup on Calling all Cars. Count ‘em all out if you want, or just dance, which is what this music was always intended for. See you on the dance-floor!
The Dice Cubes released their third album, Make Me Motor, right at the start of the pandemic lockdown in may of 2020! Call it what you will - Contempory Rock and Roll, Modern Rockabilly, Ameripolitan! Labels don’t matter! These are fun, energetic guitar based tunes, built from the love of 1950’s rock mixed with a raw punk rock aesthetic. Recorded live-of-the-floor, then mixed and mastered by the great Stew Kirkwood at his studio Sound Extractor! This record is alive from the opening beat to the terminus pulse! This album has been pressed on glorious black 180 Gram Vinyl for your listening pleasure!
